London might’ve recently overtaken Hong Kong as the most expensive city in the world, but let’s not pretend: Hong Kong is still an extremely pricey destination, whether you live there or you’re just visiting. In both cases, this is largely because of the cost of finding a place to stay – an average of $11,000 per square foot if you’re buying, or HK$1,447 ($186) if you’re paying by the night.
I know from personal experience that it’s possible to travel on a budget in Hong Kong by eating street food, using ferries and the Hong Kong MRT to get around and partaking in free activities and exercising self-control while shopping for Hong Kong’s famous electronics. Stay in any of these hotels, each with price tags of under $100 per night, to save even more on your next trip to Hong Kong.
City Garden Hotel
With rates starting at just $74 per night, City Garden Hotel situates you on northeastern Hong Kong Island, a location as convenient as it is picturesque. Use the money you save on a room here to dine in YUE, a Michelin Star restaurant located just steps away.
Harbour Plaza 8 Degrees
Harbour Plaza 8 Degrees is located a few MRT stops away from where most Hong Kong tourists hang out, but at just $82 for a handsomely-decorated room with Wi-Fi, an LCD TV and a minibar, you’ll be happy to ride the train.
V Wanchai2 Hotel
You’re right in the heart of it all when you stay at V Wanchai2 Hotel, which is just steps from Wanchai, a major MRT hub and also, where you can take the ferry over to Kowloon. Convenience doesn’t usually come cheap, but if you luck out, you can pay as little as $69 for your room here.
The VELA Hong Kong Causeway Bay
No, you’re not dreaming: You can snag a room at the VELA Hong Kong Causeway Bay for just $58 per night. Low rates have made this Hong Kong island hotel a mecca for budget travelers, but the 24-hour business center makes it easy to get work done as well.
L Hotel Elan
The only thing better than a hotel right on Kowloon Bay is a Kowloon Bay hotel that costs just $90 per night. L Hotel Elanis not only cheap and right where you want to be, but offers a swimming pool, a fitness center and a restaurant with cuisine from all around the world.
Rosedale Hotel Kowloon
Hong Kong’s plastic currency notes might be odorless, but you’ll nonethless smell savings when stay at Rosedale Hotel Kowloon, where rates start at $80 per night. Tip: Use some of the money you save to enjoy cocktails with a view on the 30th floor SkyZone Lounge.
L’Hotel Nina et Convention Centre
Located in Tseun Wan in Hong Kong’s new territories, L’Hotel Nina et Convention Centre has more than 1,600 rooms, all of which feature air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and rates starting at $86 per night.
No matter which of these cheap Hong Kong hotels you stay in, the takeaway is simple: Hong Kong is only as expensive as you make it!
