Before I visited Cambodia the first time, friends warned me about the abject lack of infrastructure and poverty that would await me there — and the vast availability of “happy” food and drinks containing magic mushrooms. Not only did I not do drugs in Cambodia but, aside from the tedious multi-part journey from Bangkok to Siem Reap, I didn’t find the roads and transport systems of Cambodia to be particularly lacking for a country of its size and population.

Although iconic Angkor Wat was nothing short of spectacular, my favorite part of Cambodia was actually the sleepy town of Siem Reap.

Thanks for the comment, Kelly! When did you visit Cambodia and where did you go?

I visited Cambodia in July of last year. We were only there for about 7 days which was such a shame and only went to siem reap and phnom penh but I absolutely loved siem reap. It was such a beautiful place and the people all over the country are just so nice and friendly. It always amazes me how they can have so little to nothing yet embrace you and want to help you with everything. I really hope to go back to Cambodia for an extended stay. Its amazing :)

Isn’t it amazing? I was particular amazed about it in light of Pol Pot’s purges. It usually seems like people who are the target of such crimes against humanity become bitter and vengeful. The Cambodians’ joy is humbling and inspiring. I want to stay in Siem Reap for a month or two, definitely, and just chill!
